i use the n900 only because debian. if nokia turn to rpm i will sell my n900 and never buy one again.

The apparent decision to go with RPM is just absurd. RPM format and the related tools are inferior and going away from .deb also means missing the tens of thousands of already pre-packaged and well integrated programs from Debian, that any developer would have been able to use to develop new software on the platform.

This has the very real chance to become an even worse development environment than Android.

And the apparent non-support for n900? Treating your customers as shills, Nokia. iPhone has raised the bar a couple years ago - the very first iPhone can still run the latest iPhone OS software and all the apps. n900 should be able to easily upgrade and run all the software until at least 2015. to be really worth the money it costs.

I'm not familiar with pacman, but I think two of the reasons against DEB were the huge package list files and the perl dependency.

Seriously, why Deb or RPM? Both seems far to complicated.

They should've tried something lightweight like pacman (from Arch Linux).

Too bad - I was looking at buying an N900 as a fun toy and because it's Debian-based. But with the switch away from Debian packages (which has the best packaging system across all Linux distributions) , Maemo devices can't hope for backports and thus the N900 is dead before it even got a real launch :-(

Yes, pure Qt stuff is API compatible (though not ABI compatible, you'll still need to recompile for Qt 4.6). I have clarified the sentence to make it more clear, thanks.

Yes it is. Please fix your blog post so people won't be lost. A pure Qt app compiled with 4.5 will work with 4.6.

The specific Maemo stuff perhaps not.

Does anyone know if Ovi Maps 3.03 for Symbian is somewhat based on Qt4.6??

I found out that it is based on webkit, and coincidence or not, it is only available for mobiles with S60 fp3 or fp5, which are the firmwares that officially support Qt4.6 on Symbian.

If Ovi Maps really uses Qt4.6 framework that would make total sense, since Nokia is telling that all their GPS enabled devices will be sold with free voice navigation starting on March 2010, unless they use the excuse that N900 is not a phone, just a Tablet which can eventually make calls.

"Standard" Qt is source compatible. But if you're using anything Maemo5-specific, you have to rewrite your code. I think even the menu code was different, but I think that was fixed in Qt 4.5 (though I'm not sure.

Note that Qt 4.6 _is_ source (API) compatible with Qt 4.5. In general it is also binary compatible, but it just happens that Qt 4.5 for Maemo 5 was built using a configuration that made it incompatible with Qt 4.6.

Vor allem, da das Hildegunst Blog ja nicht mal offensichtlich damit wirbt, auf welcher Programmiersprache es läuft!

Palm hat so schon keine Applikationen zu bieten - und jetzt schränken sie das noch mal regional ein. Eine schöne Gängelung der User - und fast ein K.O.-Kriterium.

Die Android-Plattform verfolge ich auch schon eine Weile, aber bisher sind die Geräte (zumindest für meinen Geschmack) alle zu sehr von den Google-Applikationen abhängig. Und ich habe nun mal keine Lust, alle meine Daten bei Google zu speichern - auch wenn deren Backups und Services anscheinend wesentlich stabiler laufen als der Rest der "Frau Holle" Anbieter.

War und ist halt nur ne Freizeit-Geschichte sowie eine Experimentier-Plattform. Ich werde versuchen, einigermaßen regelmäßig meinen Senf hier abzulassen. :)
